About 62 percent of spending on groceries is done locally.  41% of respondents purchase 81 to 100% of their groceries within Pope County.  This means that about 60 percent of respondents purchase a significant portion of their groceries outside of the county.

 

People who are employed outside of Pope county purchase a significantly

lower percentage of their groceries  in Pope county when compared to those

who are not employed outside the county.  This is about 16 percent less spending.

 

Those with farm employment also spend significantly less locally than those without farm employment.

 

Residents of Glenwood, Long Beach, and Starbuck have significantly higher local spending on groceries than those from other areas of the county.

 

Higher incomes tend to spend more on groceries within Pope county, those

with lower incomes tend to spend more outside the county.

 

As might be expected, those who typicaly purchase groceries in the county

believe that advertising specials are more important to their spending

more locally than those who typically purchase a lot of groceries outside

the county.  However, the 60 to 80 percent spending group has a very high response to the importance of advertising specials.  Advertising does seem to be important to this group that still does some grocery shopping locally, but not all of it.

 

The question about extending hours seems to have 60 to 70 percent responding that more hours would be either somewhat or very important for spending more on groceries in the county.  This opinion does not seem to change depending on how much they currently spend on groceries in the county.  That is, the opinion about extending hours seems to be roughly the same across the levels of how much is currently purchased in the county.

 

More selection, better service, clean/updated look, more competitive

pricing, are important to spending more on groceries.  These factors are significantly more important to those that have larger purchase percentages.

 

Delivery availability does not appear to be an important feature that

would encourage more spending on groceries.
