About 60 percent of food and beverage spending is done within the county.  About 30 percent of respondents spend over 80 percent of their food and beverage spending in the county.  There is substantial spending outside the county.

 

Those families with employment outside the county have significantly less spending on food and beverages inside the county.  Their spending is about 12 percent less than those without employment outside the county.  This difference in spending is larger outside the Glenwood – Long Beach area.

 

Families with farm employment have significantly less spending on food and beverages than families with no farm employment.

 

All regions represented in the survey have a substantial portion of food and beverage spending outside the county with those living in Long Beach spending the highest percentage in Pope County.

 

There is no evidence of different spending patterns across income levels.

 

Advertising, better selection, better service all are associated with increased local spending on food and beverage services.

 

Those respondents that spend between 20 and 60 percent within the county believed that more selection and choice was more important to them to spend more than for those in other spending levels.  This implies that families with substantial outside county spending would spend more locally if there were more variety or selection.  These differences were statistically significant.  This table is included in this section.

 

A non-smoking environment was mentioned twice in written comments, as was the desire for more healthful food choices.
